Former teammates joined hundreds of fans and Quebec's premier at the Bell Centre on Sunday to pay tribute to Jean Beliveau, one of the greatest Montreal Canadiens. Beliveau, who died Tuesday at 83 after a long illness, lay in a closed casket at center ice. Fans stopped briefly to give their sympathies to Beliveau's wife, Elise -- who shook every hand that passed -- as well as his daughter and granddaughters Magalie and Mylene.

The casket lay between two giant posters of Beliveau in his prime as an imposing center on the powerhouse Canadiens teams of the 1950s and 1960s. Also on display were the Stanley Cup and three other trophies he won -- Hart (MVP), Lady Byng (sportsmanship) and Conn Smythe (playoff MVP). Fans began lining up in the early morning in frigid weather for the public viewing, the first for a Canadiens player since Maurice "Rocket" Richard died in 2000. Many were dressed in the Canadiens' red, white and blue jersey. "It was wonderful," said former teammate Dickie Moore, who visited Beliveau often during his illness. "I think Jean would love to stand up and say thank you." Quebec Premier Philippe Couillard recalled getting the autographs of Beliveau and other Canadiens when he was a teenager. "To me he summarizes elegance, confidence, and the image of what we would like ourselves to be," Couillard said. Asked what he felt Beliveau's life represented, Couillard said "confidence."

"It was at a time when Francophone Quebecers in particular needed much more confidence in themselves and I think he was one of the elements that created that confidence," he said. "For this, we are immensely grateful. He was not only a great athlete and player, he was a great man, a great Quebecer and a great Canadian." Beliveau won 10 Stanley Cups as a player with the Canadiens from 1950 to 1971 and another seven as an executive. In 1,125 regular-season games, he had 507 goals and 712 assists. He is best remembered as an iconic team captain, and for his grace off the ice. It was a difficult week for the Canadiens, who had lost speedy left wing Gilles Tremblay to an illness only days before Beliveau died. Yvan Cournoyer played on a line with Beliveau and Tremblay, and Beliveau was his first captain with the Canadiens. "I always called him not Jean, but my captain," he said. "I had a chance to win my first Stanley Cup with Jean. I had a chance to dress beside him and I roomed a lot with Jean. For me, he was like a father. He called me his son many times."

Paul MacLean, who won the Jack Adams Award as the NHL's coach of the year just two seasons ago, was fired Monday by Ottawa Senators and replaced by assistant Dave Cameron, it was announced. The news was released via the team's Twitter account and marked the first head-coaching change of the 2014-15 seasons. The Senators were off to an 11-11-5 start and are 10th in the Eastern Conference.

General manager Bryan Murray, speaking at a news conference Monday at Canadian Tire Centre, said Cameron, a favorite of owner Eugene Melnyk, will succeed MacLean. "I've had some tough days lately," said Murray, who is undergoing cancer treatment. "This is one of them." Murray said there was”uneasiness" in the locker room with MacLean. "Some of the better players felt that they were singled out a little too often maybe," Murray said. "That's today's athlete. They want to be corrected, coached, given a chance to play without being the center point of discussion in the room."

MacLean, who previously worked as an assistant to Mike Babcock in Anaheim and Detroit, won the Jack Adams Award in the 2012-13 lockout-shortened season, when he led an injury-ravaged Senators team to the postseason despite long odds. Defensive tactics by MacLean, who was in the first season of a three-year deal, allowed opponents easier entry into the defensive zone, leading to games in which the Senators were often outshot.

Cleveland finalized a trade, the first of the winter meetings, that had been in the works for weeks by acquiring Moss, a first baseman/outfielder and All-Star last season, from the Oakland Athletics on Monday for minor league infielder Joey Wendle. Moss, 31, batted .234 with 25 homers and 81 RBIs in a career-high 147 games for the A's this past season. The left-handed hitter drew 67 walks and scored 70 runs. Moss hit .268 with 21 homers in the first half of the season to earn his first All-Star selection, but a nagging hip problem cut into his production over the final months.

On Oct. 21, Moss underwent an operation on his hip. Moss said Dr. Thomas Byrd was prepared to perform microfracture surgery but all that he needed was a labrum repair and cartilage cleanup, which should make his rehab somewhat easier. Moss said his rehab is coming along well and he expects to be cleared to run later this month. The chance to join the Indians, who contended for a playoff spot until the season's final weekend, excited Moss. He said the club is similar to some of the Oakland teams he has played for.

"There's a great core group of guys, and in all honesty, it reminds me of after 2012, when they brought us all up and we all kind of took off," he said. "That next year in 2013, we had that core group of guys and the young pitching staff and we won the division by a pretty good margin. It reminds me of a team like that. It's a team with a lot of talent and a lot of capability, and it's going to be exciting to be a part of it." Despite the hip issue, Moss, who also has played for Boston, Pittsburgh and Philadelphia, finished among the American League leaders in homers, RBIs, extra-base hits and slugging percentage. He played 67 games at first base, 56 in left field and 34 in right for the wild-card winning A's.

"One of the things that attracted us to Brandon is he's got the versatility to play either corner spot in the outfield and first base," Indians general manager Chris Antonetti said at the winter meetings in San Diego. Acquring Moss to solidfy the middle of the order could mean decreased playing time for David Murphy and Nick Swisher, who hit .208 with eight homers in a season cut short at 97 games because of injuries. The switch-hitter had surgery on both knees in August. With two more years on a four-year, $56 million contract, moving Swisher in a deal likely would be difficult.

Clemons adds depth to Arizona's secondary and a familiarity with the Cardinals' defensive scheme. One reason the 29-year-old was signed was as an insurance policy in case surgery on safety Tyrann Mathieu’s left thumb doesn't go as planned. Another reason was because Clemons played for Cardinals defensive coordinator Todd Bowles from 2009-11.

"Chris is a big, active safety Todd has had in the past," Arians said. "He is aware of our system and we'll plug him in and see what we can get out of him in two walkthrough days and see if he can play Thursday night." Clemons hasn't played since last season, his last in Miami. During his first five years, all with the Dolphins, Clemons played in 72 career games -- 48 of them starts -- he had 256 tackles, 1.5 sacks, four interceptions, two forced fumbles and two fumble recoveries. He started his final 32 games in Miami, recording 185 tackles -- 90 in 2013 and 95 in 2012 -- and three interceptions.

He was cut by the Houston Texans on Aug. 31, five months after he signed a two-year contract worth $2.7 million with $450,000 guaranteed. The Cardinals have allowed opposing quarterbacks to throw for 264 yards or more the last two games after holding them to less than 200 in five of their previous six games.

The Atlanta Police Department's public affairs office issued a statement confirming the accusation. "The Atlanta Police Dept. has been contacted by a female who advised she was sexually assaulted by Sammie Hill, who is a NFL player. We are working with the female to obtain information about this incident. At this time, the report is not available," the statement said. Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt said at his Monday afternoon news conference the team was aware of the allegation and would soon issue a statement.

A bit later the team said: "We are aware of the report. We will let the police investigate the allegation and we will provide any assistance they need. We have discussed the matter with Sammie and we will continue to gather facts." Hill's agent, Brian Levy, did not respond to an email seeking comment. Hill has played in all 13 games for the Titans this season. Defensive coordinator Ray Horton offered Hill a rave review last week.

"He wins at his position probably at an 85 percent clip," Horton said. "If he's on a more talented team and getting more sacks, he'd be mentioned as a potential team MVP and, on the right team, a potential Pro Bowl nose guard." Hill has 25 tackles and two sacks on the season.

Further testing on Eric Berry confirmed that he has Hodgkin's lymphoma.

"This is a diagnosis that is very treatable and potentially curable with standard chemotherapy approaches," Dr. Christopher Flowers, a lymphoma specialist at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, said in a statement released through the Chiefs. "The goal of Mr. Berry's treatment is to cure his lymphoma and we are beginning that treatment now."Berry, 25, is from the Atlanta area and has chosen Emory for his treatment. He also released a statement through the Chiefs.

"My family and I are very grateful for the amount of support we have received over the last couple of weeks. I can't tell you enough how much I appreciate all the words of encouragement, the blessings and well wishes," the statement read. "I want to thank the Emory University School of Medicine, along with Dr. Flowers and his team, for all of their hard work and effort in diagnosing and creating a plan for me to battle this thing."I will embrace this process and attack it the same way I do everything else in life. God has more than prepared me for it. For everyone sharing similar struggles, I'm praying for you and keep fighting!"

Penguins acquired forward Rob Klinkhammer and a conditional draft pick from the Coyotes for defenseman Philip Samuelsson. Klinkhammer has three goals in 19 games this season for the Coyotes. He scored 11 goals and added nine assists in 72 games last year with Arizona and will give the Penguins needed depth up front.

National’s outfielder Jayson Werth was convicted Friday of reckless driving and sentenced to 10 days in jail for driving his Porsche over 100 mph on the Capital Beltway earlier this year.Fairfax County General District Court Judge Penney Azcarate said a jail sentence was appropriate given the excessive speed."I-495 is not a racetrack," Azcarate said in imposing the sentence. She added that her sentence would be the same regardless of "what a person does for a living."

Werth, wearing glasses and a conservative suit, briefly took the stand in his own defense. He conceded that he may have been going 90 mph, but disputed that he ever broke 100. He immediately appealed his conviction to Fairfax County Circuit Court. It is not unusual in Virginia for defendants to receive short jail sentences on reckless driving convictions where the speeds exceed 100 mph.

Werth's lawyer, Rod Leffler, sought unsuccessfully to have the case tossed out, questioning the reliability of the trooper's pacing of Werth. Leffler also asked the judge to take into account that the speeding occurred at 9:30 a.m. on a Sunday morning, when traffic was light. Leffler did not return a call Friday seeking comment. Werth, 35, has three seasons left on a $126 million, seven-year contract with the Nationals. He batted .292 last season with 16 home runs and 82 RBIs in 147 games.While the judge imposed a 10-day sentence, in reality Werth would likely serve only five days because of rules and procedures at the county jail.

During the trial, state trooper P.L. Green testified that on July 6, he followed Werth for about half a mile on the beltway at 105 miles an hour before pulling him over on the exit to the George Washington Parkway. Green said he drew his weapon as a precaution as he approached Werth, though he quickly holstered it and said the conversation they had during the stop was cordial. Green said he asked Werth what he was doing and Werth said "he was pushing his luck."National’s general manager Mike Rizzo said in a statement Friday that Werth "has cooperated fully with the authorities throughout this process" and declined further comment.

Yankees signed free-agent left-handed reliever Andrew Miller to a four-year , $36 million contract. General manager Brian Cashman said the team's original offer for Miller was four years, $32 million, but the Yankees upped it to $9 million per year when they learned the lefty had a four-year, $40 million deal on the table from another club. That means Miller left $4 million on the table to play for the Yankees.

The 6-foot-7 Miller, who will turn 30 in May, spent the end of the 2014 season with the Orioles, having been traded by the Red Sox, for whom he had pitched the previous 3 ½ seasons -- at the trade deadline. Miller began his career with the Tigers, who selected him with the sixth overall pick in the 2006 amateur draft, and pitched three seasons with the Florida Marlins before joining Boston in 2011. Miller, essentially a two-pitch pitcher (fastball and slider) has a 30-38 career record and 4.91 career ERA.

The Buccaneers released offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford, who has been on an indefinite leave of absence due to health reasons, from his contract Friday to "pursue other opportunities," the team announced in a release. Tedford had a heart procedure performed just before the start of the season and hasn't called a play for the Bucs since the third preseason game.

"Throughout these difficult circumstances, our primary concern was for Jeff's health and well-being," Buccaneers coach Lovie Smith said in a statement. "After speaking with Jeff in recent days, it became obvious that a mutual decision to release him from his contract was the best way forward. We wish Jeff continued success in the next phase of his career”.

Tedford, who was the head coach at California from 2002-12, had joined the Bucs along with Smith in January. "When my health issues arose, I simply tried to ignore them, and then I made the mistake of twice trying to come back too early," Tedford said in a statement. "At that point, the organization proposed, and I agreed, that an indefinite leave of absence would allow me the proper amount of time to rest and rehabilitate myself. I am happy to state that I'm healthy now and feeling great.

"The Buccaneers have been very accommodating to me and my family during this time and, while they left the door open for a possible return, I feel that coming back at this point would disrupt the trust and continuity that builds throughout the season in offensive meeting rooms and on the sidelines."Quarterbacks coach Marcus Arroyo, who was on Tedford's staff at California, has called plays for the Bucs (2-10) this season with input from the rest of the offensive staff.

The Bucs are averaging 313.6 yards and 18.3 points per game, while ranking 26th in total offense and 28th in scoring.Tedford is the second offensive coordinator in the past six seasons to leave the team without ever calling a play during the regular season. Jeff Jagodzinski was hired by incoming coach Raheem Morris in 2009, but was fired before Tampa Bay's final preseason game.

Chief’s tight end Travis Kelce was fined $11,025 by the league for unsportsmanlike conduct. Kelce made an obscene gesture that Chiefs coach Andy Reid later called immature. Kelce has been unavailable all week to discuss the gesture. He made the gesture during the fourth quarter of the 29-16 loss to the Broncos. After the game, Kelce explained on Twitter that the gesture was aimed at Miller for the late hit and not at Coleman. Kelce later deleted that tweet. Miller was not fined for the hit on Smith.

Veteran Eric Winston has signed a one-year contract with the Bengals. Winston, a nine-year player who happens to also be the president of the NFL Players Association, spent training camp with Seattle but has not played this season.

The team made the official announcement Tuesday afternoon. The Bengals waived offensive tackle Jamon Meredith in a corresponding move but still have one open spot available on the 53-man roster. Linebacker Jayson DiManche was placed on injured reserve Monday with a broken forearm. The Bengals would like to add another linebacker to help with depth at the position and on special teams. Smith suffered a torn triceps against Houston on Nov. 23 and subsequently was placed on injured reserve. He was replaced by Marshall Newhouse against the Texans and Newhouse started last Sunday's 14-13 win at Tampa Bay, although right guard Clint Boling also took some snaps at tackle as the Bengals search for the best combination of players heading into the final four games of the season. "Not good enough," said head coach Marvin Lewis when asked about how the offensive line played as a whole against Tampa Bay. "Not as good as we need. We had a couple guys play pretty well, but as a group we didn't play as well as we needed to play. We need to play better."

The offense produced just 288 yards against the Buccaneers. QB Andy Dalton was sacked twice and Tampa Bay was credited with four hits on him as well as seven tackles for loss in the game. The Bengals signed Meredith, a sixth-year player, last week after Smith was placed on IR but Winston (6-6, 305) brings a deeper resume to the roster. Winston, 31, entered the league as a third round draft pick by Houston in 2006 and has started 119 of the 126 games he's played, including all 16 games in each of the previous seven seasons. He was with the Texans from 2006-11, played for Kansas City in 2012 and was with Arizona last season.
