Downton Abbey is a British period drama television series. It first aired on ITV in the United Kingdom and Ireland on 26 September 2010 and on PBSin the United States on 9 January 2011 as part of the Masterpiece Classic anthology. Following the announcement of "Downton Abbey" main cast member Maggie Smith (who plays as the Dowager Countess of Grantham, Madame Crawley) that she won't be reprising her role if even the hit British period drama gets another season. Saturday's opening sketch had a Jay Leno (Darrell Hammond)-Conan O'Brien (Bill Hader) summit on "Larry King Live," with Fred Armisen playing the role of King (and doing so quite well). Host Sigourney Weaver, whose father was president of NBC in the 1950s, mentioned it in her monologue. The best dissection of the situation, though, came from "Weekend Update" anchor Seth Meyers. ABC has renewed Nashville for a third season. The country music drama has continued to be a decent performer for the network, garnering fairly steady ratings week to week. Over its two seasons, the show has won critical acclaim and amassed a loyal following of fans. Music from the series has also been steadily released featuring songs sang by the cast. Simon Cowell and Sony Corp's Sony Music Entertainment have signed on for a long-term venture to produce TV, music and film, starting with the U.S. version of "The X Factor." According to the Financial Times (via Reuters), it is a five-year deal wherein Sony relinquishes 100% ownership of Simon Cowell's record label, Syco Records, in exchange for a 50% ownership in this new venture. It was confirmed today that Two and a Half Men will be ending its run after its upcoming twelfth season. CBS Entertainment President Nina Tassler made the announcement at the network's press presentation to discuss their fall schedule. Canadian network Space has renewed freshman series Bitten for a second season in 2015. The supernatural drama, which airs on Syfy in the States, has been picked up for 10 more episodes that will begin filming this summer. The series is popular up north and has become Space's #1 original series of all time. US fans will surely be pleased with the news, as the show's return to Syfy appears likely - though no official statement has been made as of yet regarding a stateside pickup. Series 7 will contrinue the trend started by series 6, in that the episodes will air the same day in the UK and US. The UK will get the episodes a few hours earlier due to the time differences, but Americans won't have to wait for weeks at a time to be on the same footing as the Brits (even though, to be fair, the Brits paid for it). The first five episodes of series 7 will air this fall, with a Christmas special in December, and then the remaining eight episodes airing next spring. But, as with other AMC series The Walking Dead, sometimes the dead rise from the grave. According to TVLine, DirecTV and Netflix might just be interested in reviving the show. Both companies are famous for sustaining shows that were axed on other networks. DirecTV saved Friday Night Lights and Damages, while Netflix performed perhaps the most lauded television resurrection of all time by bringing back adored sitcom Arrested Development for a fourth season, which will premiere next year.
