Prosecutors say that while Lorenzo Gilyard was escaping detection as a serial killer for two decades, advances in DNA testing were being made that would eventually link him to seven women who were killed in Kansas City in 1986 and 1987. "The defendant wasn’t counting on the fact that science would catch up with him, but it did," said Ted Hunt, chief trial assistant, during closing arguments in the murder trial. "Twenty years later, a part of his own body is pointing a finger back at him." Six other murder counts, including one stemming from the death of an Austrian national, were dropped last week as the trial got under way, although prosecutors could refile those charges…

He died in a New York City hospital of complications after minor surgery, according to a CBS statement released on Saturday. Rooney was 92. In a 2010 interview with USA TODAY, he was asked about retiring and shot back his own question: "Retire? From what? Life?" He allowed that "I suppose the time may come." It did on Oct. 2, when he delivered his 1,097th and final essay, telling his viewers, "I've done a lot of complaining here, but of all the things I've complained about, I can't complain about my life." 60 Minutes didn't replace him with another essayist — perhaps the ultimate compliment. A former war correspondent, he wrote 16 books — from Air Gunner (1944), an accoun…

  5. Her first comments came on Friday (Nov. 25) and appear to be at the expense of her soon-to-be ex-husband. Demi, who inexplicably still uses the Twitter name of "MrsKutcher.", writes "Why do we have only 1 day for giving thanks? Is that why so many people feel unappreciated? Make this 1 of 365 days of Thanksgiving!". In 2010, we started hearing tales of Ashton’s extramarital affairs. First it was Brittany Jones, who claimed she and Ashton “made love on the couch” one day when Demi wasn’t home. Then, earlier this year, we learned that Ashton got drunk and had sex with another woman, Sara Leal, who subsequently sold her story to Us Magazine, so it's entirely possible that th…

  7. William Lester Suff, also known as the Riverside Prostitute Killer, and the Lake Elsinore Killer, is an American serial killer. Between 1986 and 1992, he murdered at least twelve prostitutes in Riverside, California. In 1995, a jury found that the unassuming-looking middle-aged man had picked up street walkers in his van, then strangled or knifed them, and proceeded to do unsettling things with their corpses. His conviction appeared to bring to a close a six year-long manhunt for the so-called “Riverside Prostitute Killer” wanted in connection with the slayings of 19 prostitutes. Riverside’s long search for the prostitute killer led to Suff’s arrest. On January 9, 1992, p…

  8. Little is known of Enriqueta Martí i Ripollés before she arrived in Barcelona in the early years of the 19th Century. What is known is that she did not arrive alone. She brought with her a brutal penchant for survival and an equally fierce desire to rise above a poverty that she would soon sadistically twist to her advantage. She preyed on young children from Barcelona’s destitute Raval Quarter. She would prostitute them to the pedophiles and deviants who had for so long protected and frequented her brothels. She could at once appear impoverished, dressed in rags to entice her prey and then as evening fell, attend the lavish galas of the El Liceu (Barcelona Opera House) a…

  10. Bill Cosby admits, in a 2005 deposition, that he obtained Quaaludes with the intent of giving them to young women in order to have sex, and that he gave the sedative to at least one woman. The Associated Press went to court to compel the release of the documents, which have since been made public. Lawyer Dolores M. Troiani asked in September 2005, "When you got the Quaaludes, was it in your mind that you were going to use these Quaaludes for young women that you wanted to have sex with?" Cosby answered, "Yes." The comedian had been testifying under oath in a lawsuit filed by a former Temple University employee and said that he gave her three half-pills of Benadryl. That…

  12. It was announced on Wednesday that John Barrowman would be joining the cast as a “well-dressed man” who is “as mysterious as he is wealthy … he is an acquaintance of the Queen family and a prominent figure in Starling City," according to Entertainment Weekly, who broke the news. The role will be a recurring one. The DC Universe is filled to the brim with mysterious wealthy men, and since my knowledge of those men is limited to Bruce Wayne, I'll leave speculation on the comic counterpart of Barrowman's new character to the more qualified comic book experts. EW speculates that Barrowman will be playing Stanley Dover Sr., who in the comics tries to use his son's pet mons…

She is set to join the period drama for an episode slated to air on Dec. 4. where she will play a debutante who has a past with Ted (Michael Mosley). After a bit of a slow start, this new series appears to be gaining some momentum. It recently has signed the former "LOST" producer Steven Maeda as its show runner. It also received an order for five additional episodes, but has yet to receive a full season order. Anyone have any thoughts on the new cast change, or the show in general? I have followed this show since its airing, and I personally find the series is trying out so many different things - comedy, romance, spying - that it's hard to tell what sort of show it will…

Charles Schumer, calling for increased gun control. The pair's joint appearance in New York marked the first time Amy Schumer has spoken out about gun violence since police say John Houser killed two women and then himself at a Lafayette, Louisiana, movie theater on July 23, using a gun he was able to purchase legally even though a 2008 court order sent him to a mental health facility. Federal law prohibits the purchase of guns by anyone who has been involuntarily committed to a mental health facility, but …

A death wish, once in custody, is not unusual among compulsive killers. Carroll Edward Cole, admitted murderer of thirteen persons, was securely serving out a term of life in Texas, with parole a possibility in seven years, when he elected voluntarily to face a pair of murder charges in Nevada, fully conscious of the fact that he would be condemned to die upon conviction. Once the sentence had been passed, facilitated by his guilty plea, Cole staunchly fended off appeals and efforts of assorted liberal groups to interpose themselves on his behalf. His execution, in December 1985, immediately paved the way for others in the Western states, but Cole's significance lies else…

Peter William Sutcliffe was the first of six children born to John and Kathleen Sutcliffe, on 2 June 1946, in Bingley, Yorkshire. As a boy he was reserved, and preferred spending time with his mother, finding it difficult to make friends at school, and he was often bullied. He left school aged fifteen, with no clear career focus, and his early working life was spent in a number of short-lived, menial occupations, which included a stint as a gravedigger. Between November 1971 and April 1973 Sutcliffe worked at the factory of Baird Television Ltd, on the packaging line. He left when he was asked to go on the road as a salesman.
