Ryanwas, like his father, a decorated Navy SEAL, and his deathby suicide was attributed to depression. But Frank Larkin didnot accept this explanation. When pathologists discovered Ryansuffered from scarring in his brain, likely due to repeatedlow-level blast exposure, this father campaigned for a changein how Special Operations and the rest of the military trainand protect their service members. Clooneyco-wrote both the original screenplay and this play, whichtell the story of pioneering journalist Edward R. Murrow, whotook on Senator Joseph McCarthy. Clooney calls it a fight forthe ages and says the plot, which revolves around themes oftruth, intimidation, and courage in corporate media,resonates today.
