[imgleft] [/imgleft] Fast National ratings for Monday, Jan. 18, 2010 The premiere of "Life Unexpected" pulled in a decent-sized audience by The CW's standards Monday, building on its lead-in and scoring the most viewers at 9 p.m. on a Monday in a year. At the top of the ratings, the story was much the same as usual. CBS led the night with 12.9 million viewers and a 7.7 rating/12 share in households. FOX (11 million, 6.4/9) came in second, a little bit ahead of ABC (10.2 million, 6.5/10), while NBC (5.1 million, 3.1/5) finished fourth. The CW trailed with 2.5 million viewers and a 1.6/2. CBS also led among adults 18-49 with a 4.2 rating. CBS, 3.5, finished second in the demographic, just ahead of FOX's 3.4. NBC averaged 1.9 and The CW 1.1. U.S. Senate seat, Scott Brown, is the dad of season five semi-finalist Ayla Brown. Ayla famously always wore some killer heels with her 6'0 frame and made Ryan Seacrest look like the Keebler elf that he is. Below are two of her Top 24 performances. The first one is "Unwritten," which was not our favorite Ayla offering but in the video montage before the song she and her dad toss around the football as she talks about thinking her dad was Elvis when she was little. [imgleft] [/imgleft] It looks like current "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell will be influencing the entertainment world for quite some time. Simon Cowell and Sony Corp's Sony Music Entertainment have signed on for a long-term venture to produce TV, music and film, starting with the U.S. version of "The X Factor." According to the Financial Times (via Reuters), it is a five-year deal wherein Sony relinquishes 100% ownership of Simon Cowell's record label, Syco Records, in exchange for a 50% ownership in this new venture. Cowell said in a statement, "I have had a fantastic relationship with Sony for many years and I'm delighted we are launching this venture together." Meanwhile, the Other Simon (Simon Fuller) recently announced plans for a new entertainment company as well. So everybody should be happy, right? Except Fuller told the London Times over the weekend that "X Factor" is the TV equivalent of wrestling, incomparable to the "boxing"-type purity of "American Idol." "I want "Idol" to be purely about talent. We're not going to be led into the mud, we're going to stay on our hill." Hmmm. We aren't entirely sure what makes "American Idol" so high and mighty over "X Factor," particularly with "Idol's" history of giving some people better edits than others, playing up sob stories for some contestants but not others and putting cannon fodder in the Top 24 so the "right" people make the Top 12. [imgleft] [/imgleft] "Rescue Me" will return to FX in the early summer, but it might not stick around for much longer after that. The cable channel has 19 more episodes of the show on tap, FX president and general manager John Landgraf said Sunday (Jan. 17) at the TV Critics Association press tour -- but beyond that, he's not certain of its future. "We've ordered 19 seasons -- 19 episodes -- that was a little bit of a Freudian slip, wishful thinking. We've ordered 19 episodes," Landgraf said. "... I think there's a good chance that these 19 will be the final 19 episodes of 'Rescue Me,' but we haven't decided yet." The episodes that are left will be broken into two seasons. The first 10 will air this summer, with the next nine likely following in 2011. - It's been a long time since FX tried a late-night franchise (anyone remember "The X Show"?), but now that a certain late-night host is about to enter the job market ... "I think we'd love to have a daily show -- if it's as good as Conan or 'The Daily Show' or Colbert," Landgraf said. He doubts landing Conan O'Brien is something FX could afford at the moment, but he does call the soon-to-be-former "Tonight Show" host "one of the great media talents of our time." "If he ever became available to basic cable, we'd go after him in a heartbeat," Landgraf said. "I kind of doubt that will happen, but you never know." - Don't get too excited, but Landgraf is meeting with Joss Whedon soon. For lunch. "Actually, is representatives called and set up a lunch with Joss in the next two or three weeks," Landgraf said in response to a question about whether he'd consider working with the "Dollhouse" and "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" creator. "I have enormous respect for him," Landgraf said of Whedon. "... I don't really know Joss well, but I'm really looking forward to meeting him. I love his stuff." As we say, don't overheat yet. In contrast to Matt, Sommer will play a working class fireman who hopes to extinguish the flame Matt left behind. The role may be recurring if the chemistry is right, since he'll be taking Betty on a disastrous first date. Before you judge Betty too harshly, it's not like she kissed Matt goodbye and then immediately hitched a ride on a fire engine. Sommer's episode is set to air in March. [imgleft] [/imgleft] "Saturday Night Live" unsurprisingly had a few things to say about the madness afflicting the rest of NBC's late-night lineup. Saturday's opening sketch had a Jay Leno (Darrell Hammond)-Conan O'Brien (Bill Hader) summit on "Larry King Live," with Fred Armisen playing the role of King (and doing so quite well). Host Sigourney Weaver, whose father was president of NBC in the 1950s, mentioned it in her monologue. The best dissection of the situation, though, came from "Weekend Update" anchor Seth Meyers. He did a two-minute rant about how NBC got itself into this situation by comparing it to an off-the-rails marriage. See for yourself. [imgleft] [/imgleft] There are no huge mysteries at the core of "Human Target," no deep back story that's going to require a whole lot of pondering and unpacking after every episode. And that's more than all right. What "Human Target" does have a whole lot of is fun. It's a somewhat old-fashioned and pretty kick-ass hour of TV, with great action sequences in the first two episodes and, probably more important, well-turned performances by its three regulars: Mark Valley, Chi McBride and Jackie Earle Haley. The show is based on the DC/Vertigo comic of the same name and stars Valley as Christopher Chance, a hyper-competent private security expert who's called in to protect clients when regular protective measures won't cut it. Unlike the comics, where Chance actually becomes the people he protects through elaborate disguises, the show's Chance is basically the world's best bodyguard, skilled at all manner of combat, incredibly observant and a little bit nuts. The decision not to turn Chance into his protectees is a good one; Valley can be a charismatic actor (and, as an Army veteran, he's convincing when it comes to the physical demands of the part), and it just makes more sense to have the star of the show, and not a different guest star each week, be at the center of the action. I say that Valley "can be" charismatic because at times in his career it's felt like his employers didn't really know how to use him. That's not an issue in "Human Target" -- Valley shifts easily between action, drama and scenes that are played with a little bit of a smirk. As I watched the first two episodes, I kept thinking of "Keen Eddie," the poorly treated but highly watchable FOX series from a few years back that starred Valley and used him terrifically. The same is true here. As Chance's partner Vincent, McBride gets to show off some of his considerable comic chops as well, particularly in scenes where Haley's Guerrero -- a shady hacker who helps out when he's needed -- is involved. The show also operates at a pretty high level when it comes to the frequent action sequences. Sunday's (Jan. 17) premiere takes place mostly aboard a high-speed train and features a couple of well-choreographed large stunts as well as a fantastic (and lengthy) fight scene in a cargo car. The second episode, which will air Wednesday (Jan. 20), the show's regular night, has a couple other good fights (one of which involves McBride) in close quarters on a plane. That second episode does feel somewhat more constrained than the pilot, but the show doesn't suffer for it. There are fewer slam-bang stunts than in the pilot -- as tends to be the case on any show once the week-to-week rigors of production kick in -- but the pacing and performances are such that there doesn't need to be an explosion in every act. "Human Target" also has one of the cooler opening-credit sequences on television today, and the score -- by "Battlestar Galactica" composer Bear McCreary -- is excellent. Take a look at the credits: http://video.hollywo...tid=61807076001 Circling back to the point I made at the top of this post, it sometimes feels like there's a belief among TV fans that a drama has to be complex for it to be good. I love getting sucked into the rich tapestries of "Lost" and "Mad Men" and "The Wire," but I also really like watching the off-center heroes of "Burn Notice" and "Castle" wrap up a case a week. And like those shows, there are hints in the early going of "Human Target" that there's more to unpack in their lead characters than what's on the surface. That mix of close-ended stories and longer-arc character development has undergone a renaissance in the past few seasons with shows like "House," "Bones," "Chuck" and the aforementioned "Burn Notice" and "Castle." "Human Target" is a worthy addition to that class. ---- "Human Target" premieres at 8 p.m. ET Sunday, Jan. 17 on FOX and moves to Wednesdays starting Jan. 20. The Wrap is reporting that NBC has worked out a deal with Conan O'Brien wherein he vacates the 11:35 pm "Tonight Show" in exchange for a $30 million payday. The deal has yet to be officially signed but is most likely going to be announced late Friday (Jan. 15). Meanwhile, Deadline is reporting that the deal is closer to $40 million and that Conan is insistent NBC take care of those close to him. Rumors have been swirling all day that Conan O'Brien would be taking a buyout in exchange for NBC not enforcing the non-compete clause in his contract -- which would have kept Conan off the air until 2013. Is it a fair deal? Conan gets dumped by NBC for $30-40 million? And where will Conan land? FOX? A spot on "Sons of Anarchy?" We're sure the offers will come pouring in. But it's still funny. Posted Wednesday (Jan. 13) afternoon under the "collectibles" category, the listing begins: "4 SALE: BARELY-USED LATE NIGHT TALK SHOW - MAKE ME AN OFFER!!! (Universal Studios)." Accompanied by a couple of sad photos of the empty set, the rest of the specs are pretty straightforward: This is a chance of a lifetime to own your very own late night talk show--guaranteed to last for up to seven months!! Really must see to appreciate. [imgleft] [/imgleft]Conan O'Brien is done! (Or not.) Jay Leno's definitely going back to "The Tonight Show"! (Not yet, at least.) That's about the size of Thursday's (Jan. 14) news in the NBC late-night saga. There were reports and counter-reports and denials, and it all ended up in about the same place we were the day before. To sum up: TMZ reported Thursday afternoon -- not long after NBC released its post-Olympics, Jay Leno-free prime-time schedule -- that NBC and Leno had struck a deal with NBC to return as host of "The Tonight Show." NBC quickly denied it. Soon after that, People said that O'Brien's last day as "Tonight Show" host would be Jan. 22 (echoing an earlier tweet by ESPN.com columnist and former "Jimmy Kimmel Live" writer Bill Simmons). Then People rival Us Weekly replied that wasn't the case -- "Not true," an O'Brien rep tells the magazine. "The Tonight Show" is scheduled to be in reruns the week of Jan. 25, but that was scheduled before the current situation exploded. The time when NBC has to say something is drawing near, for sure. But until that happens, we can expect more days like this one.

[imgleft] [/imgleft]Two of the men who helped make "American Idol" the biggest show on television are in the news for other reasons. Simon Fuller, who created the "Idol" format, is leaving 19 Entertainment (which produces the series) to start his own company. Former "Idol" executive producer and current "So You Think You Can Dance" judge/producer Nigel Lythgoe has been named chairman of BAFTA's L.A. branch. Fuller had mounted an effort to buy 19's parent company, CKX, but instead opted to break off. He'll still consult with CKX, which has an option to invest in the new venture. "As an entrepreneur I feel I am about to enter my prime years, and starting a new entertainment company at this moment fills me with great excitement," Fuller says in a statement. Lythgoe, meanwhile, has been elected as chairman of the British Academy of Film and Television Arts/Los Angeles. The academy's L.A. branch aims to serve as a bridge between the British and American entertainment communities through film screenings and other events and outreach efforts.

Chuck exec producer Josh Schwartz calls Bakula’s comeback arc — which would fall at the end of the spy comedy’s third season (premiering this Sunday!) — “the biggest thing we’ve ever done on the show.” Bakula is currently starring in TNT’s Men of A Certain Age. The Thursday drama will return March 18th instead of the previously announced March 4. The series will air straight through to its finale on May 27. [imgleft] [/imgleft]Russell T. Davies has confirmed that a fourth series of Torchwood is in the works. The show's creator revealed that he is hoping to get started on the new run in January 2010. "The recession has hit British television, but fingers crossed, it will be a go," he stated. "We expect things to start to move in January. "We've got great ideas for the show. I think there's a further lease on life for many years to come, but certainly for a [fourth season]." After the ace 3rd series 'Torchwood: Children of Earth' many believed this would be a final farewell for our Welsh heroes. Davies had confirmed that a 4th series would be moving ahead , he told Torchwood Magazine (via filmshaft.com): “I could write you scene one of series four right now. I know exactly how to pick it up. I’ve got a shape in mind, and I’ve got stories. I know where you’d find Gwen and Rhys, and their baby, and Jack, and I know how you’d go forward with a new form of Torchwood." It is not known how radical the changes will be in the new series, but it is worth noting that John Barrowman is expected to be joining 'Desperate Housewives' soon. Barrowman also revealed he was not sure if Captain Jack will ever feature in 'Doctor Who' again: "I don't know about Captain's Jack future in Doctor Who because nothing has been said or I haven't been asked. "I'm kind of prepared that I won't be in any of it, which is fine." In regard to the revelation by Barrowman that it would be a 13 episode run for Torchwood Series 4, a BBC spokesperson told Digital Spy: "Torchwood proved a huge success with our audiences with the one epic story stripped across a single week. And, oddly, very happy, too. “Take a look at Joe [Manganiello],” he teases of the hunk he cast as the psychic’s new love interest, the werewolf Alcide. “Do you think [they] have reason to be worried?” Rhetorical questions aside, the writer is confident that, just as his new hire won him over, he’ll win over viewers. “We were looking for a guy who was big, sexy, decent and heroic, with some darkness,” he says. “And [Manganiello] showed us all of that in the audition.” In fact, the One Tree Hill alum so impressed the boss that he wasn’t asked to take a chemistry test with leading lady Anna Paquin. “We do that when we have four or five options,” Ball explains, “and in this instance, I felt like Joe was the only one who came close to what the character needed to be.” Though Alcide isn’t introduced as a potential suitor for Sookie — “As in the book, he’s helping her find [her kidnapped boyfriend] Bill,” Ball notes, “and he has a business reason for owing Eric a favor” — one (bad) thing leads to an (incredibly sexy) other. “He’s there with her during a very painful time in her life — and his life, actually. Stone, 51, will appear in the 11th season of the hit US show, whose previous guest stars include Hilary Duff. The glamorous Hollywood star, who was nominated for a best actress Academy Award for Casino in 1996, has not yet started to film the episodes. The Oscar-nominated actress's previous TV roles have included guest-starring on the series The Practice and appearing on Will and Grace. She won an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series in 2004 for The Practice. So, what better way to promote the end of U.S. series Lost than with a encrypted recreation of Leonardo Da Vinci's Last Supper? There are two pictures which feature all of the show's characters in a replica of the famous painting and signal the final curtain for a show that has left audiences around the globe glued to their screens in awe and confusion. What does it mean? The picture, released by ABC, is thought to contain clues about the conclusion of one of television's most mysterious and popular serials Spot the difference: In the second picture the characters are looking away from Locke - who is seated in the same position as Jesus in Da Vinci's original painting Now, with the finale drawing close, fans have been analysing the new photos to see if there are any clues as to what may occur in the last series. Some of the key points fans have picked up on since the photo was released include: ? In the first photo everyone is looking at Locke, who is clearly in the Jesus position. Could this be proof that his prophet-like role among the survivors and mystical understanding of the island will continue? ? There are skulls at both Sayid’s and Hurley’s feet. According to the blog TorrentFreak, which reports on the Internet black market known as file-sharing, NBC's Heroes was the most illegally downloaded television show of 2009. The stat shouldn't be taken as gospel, however, as the site merely lists the number of downloads for a show's most popular episode and not its entire season run (not to mention that it's tough to swallow empirical data from a site with "freak" in its name). Still, TorrentFreak claims that the most-pirated episode of Heroes (the particulars of the episode were not disclosed) was "stolen" approximately 6,580,000 times. That's over half a million more than the show's average TV audience. Overall, sci-fi and action dominated the list of most-pirated shows, with Lost (6,310,000 downloads), Prison Break (3,450,000), Dexter (2,780,000), and House (2,590,000) rounding out the top five. Eight of the top ten entries were broadcast shows, and two were premium-cable shows (Dexter and no. 10 True Blood), indicating that TV piracy isn't committed primarily by those who don't want to pay extra for HBO and Showtime, but rather by those who don't want to pay for cable at all and are willing to watch on their dinky computer monitors. And while online piracy is thought to be the realm of the male basement nerd, both Grey's Anatomy and Desperate Housewives made the top ten list. Either female basement nerds are getting into the act too, or the guys out there are getting soft. Overall, the takeaway from these numbers isn't that there are millions of horrible people out there stealing TV (a large chunk of the downloads is thought to be from foreign markets that can't get the shows legally), it's this: Television viewing habits are changing.
